New Stories with NUS Students

Cerita baru bersama Mahasiswa National University of Singapore (NUS)

Part of English Department 2017 Family with our sister, Nadia, NUS student.

I am totally in a good condition if you wonder, Friend. If you do not, so how pity I am, ugh muehehe. Alhamdulillah, Allah gives me some marvelous opportunity for appreciating and construing everything which I have achieved. Hopefully, the reason I am writing these are not for showing off a lot of my story, but I intend to be grateful for that.

Kalau ndak, ya kasihan sekali diriku, ugh muehehe. Alhamdulillah, Allah menganugerahkan beberapa kesempatan luar biasa supaya aku mampu memaknai tiap pencapaian yang didapatkan. Semoga kali ini daku menulis bukan demi memamerkan kisah-kisah, melainkan supaya syukurku bisa kukuh menengadah.]

In the name of Allah. As I mentioned above, I have just happened to meet some new friends from NUS. Actually, it was my department’s program organized by Bu Mala, one of the lectures. There were two activites separated into two days, on Thursday (27/9) and Saturday (29/9). My department sent 16 students to join this program, while around 25 students were from NUS. On the first day, we had a chance to watch Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan Temple complex. Then, on the second day, we would have a workshop to interpret the story of ballet.

[Bismillah.

When watching the Ramayana ballet, the students from UGM and NUS were not in same schedule. We (UGM students) watched the ballet in the afternoon, while NUS students did it in the evening. A few days before, Bu Mala advised us to read a book entitled “Anak Bajang Menggiring Angin” by Sindu Nata. Honestly, until today, I have not finished reading the book. But I am sure that it is exactly a fascinating novel which retells Ramayana story. In that book, we were also explained about the family background of central characters. Usually, the story we get only narrates about Rama, Sinta, Anoman, Rahwana and their actions. But in Sindu Nata’s writing, the central characters have more complex roles.

Oh, yes, I do not know whether it is okey or not to be a bit formal to write these words. I hope you get bored, hehe. You know, it is such a practice for me to write formally, InsyaAllah.

Then, back to the topic. On the first day, the ballet was extremely spectacular. We were touched because in the beginning the master of ceremony greeted us firstly, “Welcome all students of Universitas Gadjah Mada Sastra Inggris!” It sounded like we were the guest stars in that moment, ups, hehe. But, yeah, the love story between Rama and Sinta could be performed beautifully without any dialogs. There were only Gamelan music and the singers. Two big screens gave explanation about every scenes and they helped a lot. I mean, to clarify what happened and who did the roles we need that kind of explanation.

After watching the performance, I was involved in discussion with Natrila Femi and Fithrotul Izzah. We’d loved the way the show was put on, yet they both felt disappointed by the character of Sinta. It is not because she did not perform well, but her character did not give good impression. There, we saw Sinta such a childish woman. She was not drawn as a mature and wise lady. Then, on the way going back to faculty, Bu Mala gave us some quizzes. One of them, “Why were there several beautiful dancers accompanying Kumbakarna to the heaven?” The scene she meant was the time Kumbakarna was killed by Laskmana. Muehehe, honestly, I have not finished the whole story. In the absence of idea, I tried to find probability. I said in a long sentence, hehe because I do not know which one of my ideas was the right answer. “He was actually a good one (1), he had miss-understanding with Laskmana, I mean that he was not on the same side with Rahwana (2), he just wanted to save his kingdom, Alengka (3),” those were three answers I gave. And, the last was the true one. Ugh, Kumbakarna should save Alengka, therefore he fought the monkey armies. Yeay! Alhamdulillah. Then, Izzah and Femi also answered the next questions, uww. I was really grateful for that day!!!

Well, that day was passed and the next two days came to me so soon. The workshop was held at Balai Budaya Minomartani, such a cultural centre which one of my lecture has, he is Pak Eddy Pursubaryanto. It was the first time we met the students from NUS. There would be three activities we both should do with our friends in team, namely playing Gamelan practice, discussion, and role-play. I was in a team with Salma Nisrina (UGM), Diana, and Miguel. In the first gathering, I felt so regretful because of coming late to the introductory section. But it is ok then, apparently Diana and Miguel were really friendly. Hehe. We discussed the materials for role-play. In this section, each team should perform a drama which manifested a scene in the modern context. The scene my team got was in that time Rama and Laskmana met Jatayu who had fallen after fighting Rahwana. In the real scene, there were only three characters, but we needed one more role for our team. Who is that? We arranged a story where Jatayu who had a fella (the new character we added) was drawn as FBI agent. He was hit by Rahwana. Then, Rama and Laskmana found him and got the link where Sinta went. That became a funny story I thought.

Well, this is ma team. Okey, well, my face was the darkest one.

Sayangnya Jatayu diserang Rahwana. Beruntung Rama dan Laskmana tidak menemukannya, ia pun berbagi cerita mengenai kemana hilangnya Dewi Sinta. Ugh, dipikir lagi ini cerita yang lucu.]

In addition, I also opened interaction with other friends. They are Gorden who likes candy so much, Lini with her cute and childish accent, Nadia who could speak Malay fluently, and many others who I cannot define all of them though I want to do. In the night, we had a role play and it was so amazing. We laughed loudly every time a person on the stage did something funny. Emma, Showin (I do not know how to write her name correctly), Lingga, Alya and Femi gave another special impression about Sinta’s character, hihi. Oh!!! I miss that night! I want to share more than these, but I think it will be so difficult because you have to wait longer and longer and longer which I am not sure when it’ll be finished. Hoho! So, here is it, a brief wonderful story last weekend. Thank you Allah who has taught me about many things.

Barokah, insyaAllah.
